The fulness of Christ—received

The fulness of Christ—received

‘And of his fulness have all we received.’
John 1:16

Suggested Further Reading:
Colossians  2:1–10

The text informs us that there is a fulness in Christ.
There is a fulness of essential Deity,
‘for in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead.’

There is a fulness of perfect manhood,
for in him ‘bodily’ that Godhead was revealed.
Partaker of flesh and blood,
made in all things like unto his brethren, there was nothing lacking that was necessary to the perfection of human kind in him.

There is a fulness of atoning efficacy in his blood,
for ‘the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.’ There is a fulness of justifying righteousness in his life,
for ‘there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.’

There is a fulness of divine prevalence in his plea,
for ‘he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him,
seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.’

There is a fulness of victory in his death,
for ‘through death’ he destroyed ‘him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.’

There is a fulness of efficacy in his resurrection from the dead,
for by it we are begotten ‘again unto a lively hope.’
There is a fulness of triumph in his ascension,
for ‘when he ascended up on high,
he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.’

There is a fulness of blessings unspeakable,
unknown; a fulness of grace to pardon,
of grace to regenerate, of grace to sanctify,
of grace to preserve,
and of grace to perfect.

There is a fulness at all times,
a fulness by day and a fulness by night;
a fulness of comfort in affliction,
a fulness of guidance in prosperity,
a fulness of every divine attribute,
of wisdom, of power, of love; a fulness which it were impossible to survey, much less to explore.

For meditation:

Praise God that he did not keep his fulness to himself.
The church is described as Christ’s body and fulness
 (Ephesians 1:23).
We can actually receive of his fulness (John 1:16),
be filled with it (Ephesians 3:19) and make progress towards it (Ephesians 4:13).

The great itinerant

The great itinerant

‘Who went about doing good.’
 Acts 10:38

Suggested Further Reading:
1 Peter 2:12–21

God give us to rest implicitly upon the Lord Jesus Christ by a living faith,
and so to be cleansed in his precious blood,
and then we may resolve to go forth and live for him.

Have we any work to do now that we can set about at once?
If we have, whatsoever our hand finds to do, let us do it.
Let us not be asking for greater abilities than we have.

If we can get them, let us do so; but meanwhile let us use what we have.
Go, housewife, to your house, and from the lowest chamber to the top, go about doing good: here is range enough for you.

Go, teacher, to your little school, and among those boys and girls, let your example tell, and there is range enough for you.
Go, worker, to your shop, and amongst your fellow workmen, let fall here and there a word for Christ; above all, let your example shine, and there is work for you.

You domestic servants, the kitchen is sphere enough for you.
You shall go about doing good from the dresser to the fireplace, and you shall have width enough and verge enough to make it a kingdom consecrated to God.

Without leaving your position any one of you, without giving up the plough, or the cobbler’s lapstone, or the needle, or the plane, or the saw, without leaving business, without any of you good sisters wanting to be nuns, or any of us putting on the serge and becoming monks, in our own calling let us go about doing good.

The best preparation for it will be, renew your dedication to Christ, be much in earnest prayer, seek the sanctifying influences of the Holy Spirit, and then go forth in your Master’s strength with this as your resolve—that as portraits of Jesus Christ it shall be said of you,
‘He went about doing good.’

For meditation:

Consider the text ‘Thy will be done on earth,
as it is in heaven’ (Matthew 6:10)—‘Thy will’ is God’s purpose;
‘be done’ is our part; ‘on earth’ is our place,
and ‘as it is in heaven’ is our pattern.
Do you, like David, delight to do God’s will (Psalm 40:8)?
 Will you join him in praying ‘Teach me to do thy will;
for thou art my God’ (Psalm 143:10)?

The glory of Christ—beheld

The glory of Christ—beheld

‘And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us,
(and we beheld his glory,
the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,)
full of grace and truth.’
John 1:14

Suggested Further Reading:
Exodus 25:1–9

Let me read the text again, giving another translation:
‘The Word was made flesh, and tabernacled among us,
and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.’

Now, you remember that in the Jewish church its greatest glory was that God tabernacled in its midst: not the tent of Moses,
not the various pavilions of the princes of the twelve tribes,
but the humble tabernacle in which God dwelt, was the boast of Israel.

They had the king himself in the midst of them,
a present God in their midst.
The tabernacle was a tent to which men went when they would commune with God, and it was the spot to which God came manifestly when he would commune with man.

Here they met each other through the sacrifice of an animal, and there was reconciliation between them.
Now, Christ’s human flesh was God’s tabernacle,
and it is in Christ that God meets with man,
and in Christ that man has dealings with God.

The Jew of old went to God’s tent, in the centre of the camp,
if he would worship: we come to Christ if we would pay our homage.

If the Jew would be released from ceremonial uncleanness,
after he had performed the rites, he went up to the sanctuary of his God, that he might feel again that there was peace between God and his soul; and we, having been washed in the precious blood of Christ, have access with boldness unto God, even the Father, through Christ, who is our tabernacle and the tabernacle of God among men.

For meditation:

Some of the things in the tabernacle which point to Christ are the veil (Matthew 27:51;
John 14:6; Hebrews 10:19–20),
the manna and the shewbread
(John 6:31,35,48),
the mercy seat (see 29th March) and the lampstand
(John 8:12; 9:5; 12:46).
There is no need of tabernacle, temple or lamp in heaven where mere pictures are replaced by the actual presence of the Lord and the Lamb (Revelation 21:22–23).
