"Whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting"

Micah 5:2

The Lord Jesus had goings forth for his people as their representative before the throne, 

long before they appeared upon the stage of time. 

It was "from everlasting" that he signed the compact with his Father, 

that he would pay blood for blood, suffering for suffering, 

agony for agony, and death for death, in the behalf of his people;

 it was "from everlasting" that he gave himself up without a murmuring word. 

That from the crown of his head to the sole of his foot he might sweat great drops of blood, 

that he might be spit upon, pierced, mocked, rent asunder,

 and crushed beneath the pains of death. 

His goings forth as our Surety were from everlasting. 

Pause, my soul, and wonder! 

Thou hast goings forth in the person of Jesus "from everlasting." 

Not only when thou wast born into the world did Christ love thee, 

but his delights were with the sons of men before there were any sons of men.

 Often did he think of them; from everlasting to everlasting he had set his affection upon them. 

What! my soul, has he been so long about thy salvation, 

and will not he accomplish it? 

Has he from everlasting been going forth to save me, 

and will he lose me now? 

What! Has he carried me in his hand, as his precious jewel, 

and will he now let me slip from between his fingers?

 Did he choose me before the mountains were brought forth,

 or the channels of the deep were digged, 

and will he reject me now? 

Impossible! I am sure he would not have loved me so long if he had not been a changeless Lover. 

If he could grow weary of me, he would have been tired of me long before now. 

If he had not loved me with a love as deep as hell, 

and as strong as death, he would have turned from me long ago. 

Oh, joy above all joys, to know that I am his everlasting and inalienable inheritance, 

given to him by his Father or ever the earth was! 

Everlasting love shall be the pillow for my head this night.

 MIGHTY WARRIOR

"I will pour water upon him that is thirsty."

"I will pour water upon him that is thirsty." 

- Isaiah 44:3

When a believer has fallen into a low, 

sad state of feeling, he often tries to lift himself out of it by chastening himself with dark and doleful fears. 

Such is not the way to rise from the dust, but to continue in it. 

As well chain the eagle's wing to make it mount, 

as doubt in order to increase our grace. 

It is not the law, but the gospel which saves the seeking soul at first; 

and it is not a legal bondage,

 but gospel liberty which can restore the fainting believer afterwards. 

Slavish fear brings not back the backslider to God,

 but the sweet wooings of love allure him to Jesus' bosom. 

Are you this morning thirsting for the living God, 

and unhappy because you cannot find him to the delight of your heart? 

Have you lost the joy of religion, and is this your prayer,

 "Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation"? 

Are you conscious also that you are barren, 

like the dry ground; that you are not bringing forth the fruit unto God which he has a right to expect of you;

 that you are not so useful in the Church, or in the world, 

as your heart desires to be? 

Then here is exactly the promise which you need, 

"I will pour water upon him that is thirsty." 

You shall receive the grace you so much require, 

and you shall have it to the utmost reach of your needs. 

Water refreshes the thirsty: you shall be refreshed; 

your desires shall be gratified. 

Water quickens sleeping vegetable life:

 your life shall be quickened by fresh grace. 

Water swells the buds and makes the fruits ripen; 

you shall have fructifying grace: 

you shall be made fruitful in the ways of God. 

Whatever good quality there is in divine grace, 

you shall enjoy it to the full. 

All the riches of divine grace you shall receive in plenty; 

you shall be as it were drenched with it: 

and as sometimes the meadows become flooded by the bursting rivers, and the fields are turned into pools, 

so shall you be-the thirsty land shall be springs of water.

 MIGHTY WARRIOR

"I will never leave thee."

"I will never leave thee."

Hebrews 13:5

No promise is of private interpretation. 

Whatever God has said to any one saint, he has said to all. When he opens a well for one, it is that all may drink. 

When he openeth a granary-door to give out food, there may be some one starving man who is the occasion of its being opened, but all hungry saints may come and feed too. 

Whether he gave the word to Abraham or to Moses, matters not, O believer; he has given it to thee as one of the covenanted seed. There is not a high blessing too lofty for thee, nor a wide mercy too extensive for thee.

 Lift up now thine eyes to the north and to the south, to the east and to the west, for all this is thine. Climb to Pisgah's top, and view the utmost limit of the divine promise, for the land is all thine own. 

There is not a brook of living water of which thou mayst not drink. If the land floweth with milk and honey, eat the honey and drink the milk, for both are thine. Be thou bold to believe, for he hath said, "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

"In this promise, God gives to his people everything. "I will never leave thee." Then no attribute of God can cease to be engaged for us. Is he mighty? He will show himself strong on the behalf of them that trust him. 

Is he love? Then with lovingkindness will he have mercy upon us. Whatever attributes may compose the character of Deity, every one of them to its fullest extent shall be engaged on our side. 

To put everything in one, there is nothing you can want, 

there is nothing you can ask for, there is nothing you can need in time or in eternity, there is nothing living, 

nothing dying, there is nothing in this world, 

nothing in the next world, there is nothing now, 

nothing at the resurrection-morning, nothing in heaven which is not contained in this text--"I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."
